This sample is so different. Technically it isn't sand because of the size of the individual "grains," but it's one of the most unusual samples on my site. Doing any greater magnification than 1:1 was pointless. The two location images were taken by S. Michael, the lucky sample collector! I don't have much faith in the accuracy of the reflectance spectrum. It is most accurate with a single, smooth solid. This sample doesn't come close to that! I also had to split one of the concretions open to see the inside structure. That's what is shown in the 1X and 3X photographs. The Concrete Cove link (S. Michael's blog) gives a great description of what a concretion is, and how they form. Needless to say, I want to go here!
