PUEBLO GRANDE MUSEUM AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK 33.60N, 112.10W

"Sand (it is
really gravel) sample is from the Pueblo Grande Museum and
Archaeological Park, a National Historic Landmark in
Phoenix, AZ. The site is both a museum and an archaeological
dig from an abandoned Hohokam village. The Hohokams lived at
the site from the years AD 500 to AD 1450.
Pueblo Grande is Spanish for Large Town. Estimates of tribal
population range from 1000 to 40,000. The Hohokams built
miles of irrigation canals branching from the Salt River to
irrigate over 20,000 acres of cultivated farmland. Pueblo
Grande was a sizable town containing domestic pithouses,
cemeteries, trash mounds (middens), and an arena style ball
court.
Archaeologists have dug through much of the remains. The
biggest building is the Platform Mound, layer upon layer of
building with the bottom layer started as a Tribal garbage
landfill. Exterior residences are arranged near the Platform
Mound.
