I found this sample in my old classroom. It definitely is a Hymenoptera. I think it is some type of wasp, but I can't be sure.  I looked through my copy of Gramaldi and Engel's Evolution of the Insects, and wasp was the closest match. It could be as old as Jurassic, but that's a guess. It is very tiny as you can see from the scale. The insect is resting in a very fine sandstone. Simply looking at the rock you could easily miss this critter, thinking it was a tiny flaw in the rock.
