HIGHWAY 11 - ≈20KM NORTH OF ABU DHABI
"This site has no vegetation, and sand collects on the lee side of some small (knee-high) hillocks. The sand is uniform, and is deposited through wind action entirely." - G. Foster

BETWEEN ABU DHABI AND DUBAI
"[The sample] is from a location just on the southern edge of Al Maktoum Airport in UAE. It's mostly windblown. It is a very fine grain although I have seen finer material." G. Foster.

DOWNTOWN ABU DHABI AFTER SAND STORM
"[The] sand sample [was] taken in downtown Abu Dhabi on 20 February 2015. What is interesting about this sample is it is reddish and entirely an accumulation of windblown sand that collected in a gutter. It is free of extraneous material and the grain size appears to be uniform in size (very fine). Abu Dhabi experienced a horrendous wind and dust storm over the weekend, and this is the result. I am not sure how far the sand traveled, but it looks to be from sand dunes near Al Ain." G. Foster Photograph and text.

MICRO DUNES IN CONSTRUCTION SAND - G. Foster Photograph
"These are special samples. I visited he pile of desert sand and tried to extract the red grains. I used a stiff piece of thin paper to skim the grains off the top. I didn't dare go too deep., but just lightly skimmed the top layer." [TOP] (Sample on the right below)
"Then I decided I would take a sample of the same sand at-large in the same area of the sand pile. I didn't separate any grains. I just took a scoop." [BOTTOM] (Sample to the left below)
"These two samples can be compared, although to my eye, after being so careful, I can't tell the difference in coloration. I suppose I see a more pronounced red in the carefully obtained sample, but not by much.
The location of the pile is up a side street near the Souk next to Trader's Hotel in Abu Dhabi (off the island). But the location is meaningless as this sand has been hauled in from the desert a few years ago, and dumped there for some reason." G. Foster
NOTE: Everything concerning the photography and processing of the two samples was identical so that changes in coloration could only come from the samples. C. Lindgren
