VALLEY OF FIRE PANORAMA FROM ELEPHANT ROCK TRAIL - Charles F. and Frances C. Lindgren Photographs(Click on Image for High Resolution Version) |
We have been trying to get back to Valley of Fire State Park for ages. Our first attempt was a disaster several years ago when we attempted to go in August when the temperature was 105! Needless to say, we didn't see much. This trip was much more productive.ELEPHANT ROCK is the signature outcrop for Valley of Fire. The hike begins at the visitors center at the East entrance. It is fairly simple unless you are carrying a tripod and extra lenses!WHITE DOMES TRAIL was something I was anticipating. Unfortunately I didn't make it to the end. You literally must slog through fine sand to get there. The features along the trail were spectavular, and I had to settle for those.THE CABINS is a few steps off of the road near the fenced in speciman of a petrified log. They were built by the Civilian Concervation Corps in the 1930s.RANDOM ROADSIDE STOP was just that. The color of the sand, or shape of the ripples must have attracted us. The black rock was amazing. I don't know its origin.Revel in the ASSORTED GEOLOGIC FEATURES as we did during our stay. Click on the images for high resolution versions. |

It is expressed as the ratio of the average radius of curvature of the edges or corners to the radius of curvature of the maximum inscribed sphere. The sphericity of a particle is: the ratio of the surface area of a sphere (with the same volume as the given particle) to the surface area of the particle. |
