"Simon J. Donovan - U.S. Army, WWI - attempted to join the Winthrop Machine Gun Co. at the age of 14. He was turned down due to his young age. At age 16 he tried again and for whatever reason was accepted although he was still under age for the military. Within a year the war had started and he was shipped overseas with the Winthrop Machine Gun Co., later re-designated the 101st Machine Gun Battery and attached to the 26th Yankee Division. He fought in all the major battles involving the 26th Div. and was killed in action in October 1918 at Verdun. He was 17. Cook Beach was dedicated to PVT Donovan in 1934." From the Website |
