GRAND CANYON OF THE YELLOWSTONE

DAY 3 was dominated by a 4X4 tour of Yellowstone supposedly based on wildlife. The best part of this was you could choose your tour! Some opted for a birder tour where the basic idea was to see birds. Our tour was based on geology with the chance of seeing the occasional critter! DAY 4 - YELLOWSTONE AND THE ROAD TO GRAND TETONS

THE GROUP AT GRAND CANYON OF THE YELLOWSTONE - Chris Van Derwilt Photograph

DAY 4 -PART 1 - Was incredible! At first we returned to some of the sites some of us had seen with our safari group the day before. The centerpiece was the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone where the group photo shown above was taken by our very talented guide Chris Van Derwilt. We then went on to explore other unvisited features of Yellowstone before leaving for Grand Teton National Park, and our new home in Jackson, Wyoming. The other places in Yellowstone were scary. If you wanted an advanced look at The Bad Place, Sulfur Cauldron and Mud Volano were it! The sounds and the smells coming from the mud and caves were incredible. We were warned that the pH of the water at one location was 1! We were advised NOT to take a deep breath, and not to expose our cameras for too long. Enough said.

DAY 4 - PART 2 - After seeing the Mud Volcano we wended our way out of Yellowstone and headed for Grand Tetons National Park. Chris gave a great description of how the Tetons were created. The highlight for many of us was a stop at an overlook of the Snake River. This is a very famous location. Ansel Adams in 1942 photographed the Snake River from this very spot! The only disappointment was the angle of the Sun. We were promised a better experience the following day. After a short time, we arrived at our hotel in Jackson, Wyoming.
