BECKEY BRIDGE OVER THE MISSISSIPI RIVER, MUSCATINE, IOWA -Ripman8 Photograph |
Gary Foster just sent me three samples from Iowa - my first samples from that state! Thank you Gary! He travels the world doing his engineering thing in many exotic places. He managed to collect these three samples between his journeys from Guam to Kuwait! The Mud Creek sample came from "the intersection of Highway 38 and Mud Creek just south of Wilton in Muscatine County. [The sample was] collected . . . on the stream bank." The second sample came from "Deep Lakes Park, south of Muscatine. [The sample was] collected from a sand deposit made by the Mississippi River near Violet Lake. These lakes are remnants of the river when it meandered. The whole area is made of sand deposits." The Sand Pit sample came from "an arbitrary sand pit at Deep Lake Park." (Quotes from Gary Foster) |
GRAIN DISTRIBUTION CHARACTERISTICS (AGI CHART) |
International Space Station 85mm Photograph Image credit: Image Science and Analysis Laboratory, NASA Johnson Space Center | GRAIN SHAPE CHARACTERISTICS(PREPARED BY GAMMA ZETA CHAPTER , SIGMA GAMMA EPSILON, KENT STATE UNIVERSITY - AGI CHART))Roundness is the degree of smoothing due to abrasion of sedimentary particles. It is expressed as the ratio of the average radius of curvature of the edges or corners to the radius of curvature of the maximum inscribed sphere. The sphericity of a particle is: the ratio of the surface area of a sphere (with the same volume as the given particle) to the surface area of the particle. |
