SACRAMENTO RIVER @ I-5, CALIFORNIA |
SAND COLLECTION SITE ON SACRAMENTO RIVE - Gary Foster Photographs |
"These two samples are interesting because they come from the Sacramento River where Interstate 5 crosses the river very near Sacramento International Airport. When I was a college student at UC Davis I organized field trips for the engineering students, and one of the places we visited was the bridge site. The bridge was under construction at the time . . . It's a beautiful site with big trees and a very green park area with a boat launch directly beneath the bridge that used to be the contractor's lay-down site." Gary Foster |
GRAIN DISTRIBUTION CHARACTERISTICS (AGI CHART) |
International Space Station 400mm Photograph Image credit: Image Science and Analysis Laboratory, NASA Johnson Space Center | GRAIN SHAPE CHARACTERISTICS(PREPARED BY GAMMA ZETA CHAPTER , SIGMA GAMMA EPSILON, KENT STATE UNIVERSITY - AGI CHART))Roundness is the degree of smoothing due to abrasion of sedimentary particles. It is expressed as the ratio of the average radius of curvature of the edges or corners to the radius of curvature of the maximum inscribed sphere. The sphericity of a particle is: the ratio of the surface area of a sphere (with the same volume as the given particle) to the surface area of the particle. |
SAMPLE #1Collected from a site between the river and a bar/restaurant called Swabbles on the north side and below the bridge. |
