GRAIN SHAPE CHARACTERISTICS

(PREPARED BY GAMMA ZETA CHAPTER , SIGMA GAMMA EPSILON, KENT STATE UNIVERSITY - AGI CHART))

Roundness is the degree of smoothing due to abrasion of sedimentary particles. It is expressed as the ratio of the average radius of curvature of the edges or corners to the radius of curvature of the maximum inscribed sphere.

The sphericity of a particle is: the ratio of the surface area of a sphere (with the same volume as the given particle) to the surface area of the particle.

ROCK SAMPLES

MY BEST GUESS IS THAT THE PENTAGONAL SAMPLE IS A GABBRO AND THE ONE ON THE RIGHT IS BASALT.

THE SAMPLE SHOWN ABOVE COULD ALSO BE GABBRO, BUT THE COLOR IS VERY DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER SAMPLE. IT DOES ALMOST HAVE THAT PENTAGONAL SHAPE!

The neat part of Gary's photograph is that it is a duplicate of the one shown in T. Scott Bryan's book Arizona Rocks! The outcrop is composed of Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks. They have been seriously altered. I had a tough time identifying the samples.
