GRAIN SHAPE CHARACTERISTICS

(PREPARED BY GAMMA ZETA CHAPTER , SIGMA GAMMA EPSILON, KENT STATE UNIVERSITY - AGI CHART))

Roundness is the degree of smoothing due to abrasion of sedimentary particles. It is expressed as the ratio of the average radius of curvature of the edges or corners to the radius of curvature of the maximum inscribed sphere.

The sphericity of a particle is: the ratio of the surface area of a sphere (with the same volume as the given particle) to the surface area of the particle.

As you can see from the size of the grains, this is not a sand sample. These are actually pebbles. I am showing two views of a rock (left and right) that Gary also included with the sample. The rock is very dense. It measures about 8 cm across at its widest points.

The sample was so large, and the individual grains were so large, that I took two "0X" images to show as much of the sample as possible.

The rock included with this sample was truly unique. The bottom (left) shows three different colors: grey, tan, and red. The top of the rock (right) is very different. The color is dark red and resembles a desert varnish. The sample is about 5 cm long at its widest pint. Click on the images for high resolution versions.
