CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN - Dru Bloomfield Photograph |
"[The] sample was taken from the top of Arcadia Road on the south side of Camelback Mountain about 500-800 feet below the peak, overlooking the Phoenix Valley. It's a rock material that has been washed down from the sides of the hill and which collected in a small alluvial area." Gary Foster |

International Space Station 400mm Photograph Image credit: Image Science and Analysis Laboratory, NASA Johnson Space Center | GRAIN SHAPE CHARACTERISTICS(PREPARED BY GAMMA ZETA CHAPTER , SIGMA GAMMA EPSILON, KENT STATE UNIVERSITY - AGI CHART))Roundness is the degree of smoothing due to abrasion of sedimentary particles. It is expressed as the ratio of the average radius of curvature of the edges or corners to the radius of curvature of the maximum inscribed sphere. The sphericity of a particle is: the ratio of the surface area of a sphere (with the same volume as the given particle) to the surface area of the particle. |

"During my early morning exercise on Arcadia Road on the slope of Camelback Mountain,I walk by a residential construction site. I watch the progress each day. Last week they dug a large trench in which they would place a conduit. This week they placed the conduit and filled the trench with a red sand. I have no idea where the sand comes from. It's about the reddest sand I have seen." Gary Foster |

The pieces of Camelback Granite formed 1.8 billion years ago during the Yavapai-Mazatzal Orogeny. The breccia and probably the sandstone formed about 25 million years ago. Since the basalt cuts through the breccia/sandstone it must be the youngest. There is no evidence of petrified wood in the area, so there is some question as to if the samples actually are wood, and/or their origin. |
