"PHOENIX" SIGN, APACHE JUCTION - Gary Foster Photograph

"The sand came from beneath the famous PHOENIX sign located off Ellsworth Ave in the foothills. . . Letters are about 60 feet high, maybe a little less. The sign is not well maintained now. I heard once that periodically a team of students from some high school scale the side of the hill and re-paint the rocks. But being near the Rio Salado rifle range, I imagine this has been curtailed." Gary Foster

(PREPARED BY GAMMA ZETA CHAPTER , SIGMA GAMMA EPSILON, KENT STATE UNIVERSITY - AGI CHART))

Roundness is the degree of smoothing due to abrasion of sedimentary particles. It is expressed as the ratio of the average radius of curvature of the edges or corners to the radius of curvature of the maximum inscribed sphere.

The sphericity of a particle is: the ratio of the surface area of a sphere (with the same volume as the given particle) to the surface area of the particle.

MILE MARKER 202 ON HIGHWAY 88

"The sample was [collected] from Mile Marker 202 on Highway 88 near Apacheland Movie Studios in Apache Junction, made famous by Elvis Presley's movie "Charro." Evenly and finely gradated, it comes from another dry wash with good, clean sand banks." Gary Foster image and quote
