Welcome to my site! Sand has always been a guiding force in my life. I've always been around it, and always been fascinated by it. As I attended various NSTA conventions, one of the most popular sessions was the one involving sand samples. People do all kinds of things with sand! At the NSTA National Convention in St. Louis, I was introduced to a great lab created by a teacher in Virginia. He had students analyze sand from Maine to Florida, and attempt to create an hypothesis on why the sand changed as you went from north to south. I was hooked! I sent out a request on several lists  requesting sand from the Atlantic Coast. Sand came in from all over the country! The lab was a huge success. The lab is now gone. At least my ability to teach it is gone because I'm retired, but the idea still lives. I want to make this a virtual lab accessible to all.

If you send me a small sample of sand, no bigger than a tea bag, I will take three  photographs of the sand and post them. One of the images (0X) will be a general image of the sand as you would see it on a beach. The second and third images will be macro photographs.   The macro images will all be of the same magnification, so they can be used for comparisons. I have also added two charts to help students classify the samples. The first is to identify how sorted the sample is. The best image to use for sorting is the 0X. It shows almost the entire sample. The 1X and 3X have a definite bias to them based on what I found interesting or artistic! The second chart is for grain shape showing roundness, and spherictity.

I want this site to be an educational tool. Everything about the site will be consistent. All of the images will be taken with the same degree of magnification. Therefore you could do a study on  sample sizes. By clicking on the thumbnail image that appears on the country or the low resolution image on the location page, you can get access to a larger version. Feel free to use these.

NOTE: The site is divided into two parts. In 2015 Microsoft stopped supporting the software I was using since 2009 to build my site. It was impossible for me to convert the old site using my new software, so I was forced to create Science of Sand 2.0. You can still access the original site by clicking "original Site" from this page, or from the "Pre2016" link on all of the state or country pages.. WARNING! When you go back to the original site, the only way to get back to this one will by using the back arrow on your browser. Sorry about that.

* The "Sample Lessons" are associated with the original site. If you visit these lessons you must use the back arrow to return to this site.

* BLACK ROCK BEACH PROJECT is definitely a work in progress. I have been collecting samples from Black Rock Beach, a local beach, during the pandemic. I am opening this page to anyone who wants to use the images of the rocks I have collected.
