"Today, Calico is restored as a
silver mining ghost town. In the 1880s, Calico was a booming
town, mining for silver and borax. The population in 1887
was 1200, with 22 saloons, China Town, and its own red light
district.
Calico produced $86 million in silver and $45 million in
borax. When the price of silver dropped from $1.31 and ounce
to $.63, mining stopped and Calico's population left."
