"This sand was eroded out of Waimea
Canyon (the 'Grand Canyon of Hawaii') so rapidly that it
retains a significant component of olivine. The mafic,
olivine-rich tholeiitic basalt that makes up the island,
should lose a lot of its olivine if exposed for any length
of time in such a warm, wet environment, but this sand
retains its olivine." S. Newton, Geologist
